What is the Moon sign, and how is it calculated?

The Moon travels along the zodiac belt in the sky and passes through all 12 signs in about 27.3 days. The daily Moon sign shows which 30-degree section of that belt the Moon is in at a given moment. In astrology the Moon stands for emotions, mood, habits and the need to feel safe, which is why the sign it is in is used to describe the general feel of the day.

The positions on this page are calculated in the tropical zodiac, geocentrically (as seen from the centre of the Earth), using an astronomical ephemeris. The Moon's phase depends on the angle between the Sun and the Moon: at New Moon the two lie in the same direction, at Full Moon they face each other.

The daily Moon sign is the same for everyone. The Moon sign in your birth chart, on the other hand, is where the Moon was at the moment you were born; to find it you need your date of birth and, ideally, your time of birth.

Frequently asked questions

What sign is the Moon in today?

As of 22 October 2026, the Moon is in Pisces. It moves into Aries on 23 October 2026, 19:53 UTC. Current phase: waxing gibbous, with about 88% of the Moon illuminated.

How long does the Moon stay in each sign?

The Moon travels round the zodiac in about 27.3 days, so it spends an average of two and a half days in each sign. Because its speed varies along its orbit, this can range from two to three days.

Is the daily Moon sign the same as the Moon sign in a birth chart?

No. The daily Moon sign is where the Moon is in the sky today, and it is the same for everyone. The Moon sign in your birth chart is where the Moon was at the moment you were born, and it is unique to you. Because the Moon moves so fast, your time of birth matters too when working it out.

What is the difference between the Moon's phase and the Moon sign?

The Moon's phase describes how much of the Moon appears lit, and it depends on the angle between the Sun and the Moon. The Moon sign is the Moon's position in the zodiac belt. A Full Moon, for example, can fall in Aries just as well as in Taurus.
